How to Start a Mobile Car Wash & Detailing Business

The equipment, the real costs, and how to actually find your first customers.

The short answer:starting a mobile car wash or detailing business comes down to three things — the right equipment for what you're actually washing, knowing your real costs so you price jobs correctly, and finding customers who need it. None of it is complicated, but getting the equipment wrong is the single most expensive mistake new operators make.

What equipment do you actually need?

A mobile vehicle wash system is built for washing and detailing cars, vans and pickups — and can also be used for servicing car or truck fleets and dealer lots. Compared to a pressure washing system, these typically carry less water, run at lower PSI, and use cold water, which keeps the whole setup more affordable and appropriately gentle on paint and finishes. At minimum you need a water tank, a pump, a hose reel, and a way to power it — everything else (extra reels, a vacuum system, an enclosed trailer to protect your gear and brand) is about matching capacity to how big your day actually gets.

Trailer or truck mount?

Most new operators default to a trailer for the extra water capacity and the flexibility to drop it at a job site, but a truck or van skid can make sense if maneuverability and parking matter more than capacity for your market. We wrote a full breakdown of this decision in our trailer vs. truck mount guide.

What it actually costs

As a rule of thumb, banks generally won't finance equipment below about $6,000, which is a reasonable floor to keep in mind when picking a system. Beyond your own bank, an equipment credit card or a home equity loan are both common ways operators fund a first system — see our financing options for the specifics. If your budget is tight right now, a modular system you can add to later is often the smarter move than stretching for capacity you don't need yet.

How to actually find customers

Individual driveway jobs are how most operators start, but the real money is in recurring accounts: fleets, dealer lots, and repeat residential customers who book you on a schedule instead of once. Start small, prove you can deliver consistently, and let that reputation carry you into the bigger, recurring work.

Why the equipment you start with matters

A home-built system — equipment bolted onto a standard utility trailer — is the most common and most dangerous shortcut new operators take. It might work for a while, but without proper weight distribution, bracing and axle placement built for what it's carrying, it can fail, sometimes catastrophically, and it won't come with a warranty or support when something goes wrong. Read more about why this matters in why purpose-built beats bolted-together.

Common questions

What equipment do I need to start a mobile car wash business?

At minimum, a water tank, a pump system, hose reels, and a way to power it all — either trailer- or truck-mounted. Mobile vehicle wash systems typically run cold water at lower PSI than pressure washing equipment, which keeps the system more affordable and appropriately gentle for vehicle paint and finishes.

How much does it cost to start a mobile car wash business?

It depends heavily on the system, but as a rule of thumb, banks generally won't finance equipment below about $6,000, which is a reasonable floor to plan around. Budget-friendly setups exist specifically to get new operators started without overbuying capacity they don't need yet.

Is a mobile car wash business profitable?

It can be, especially once you land recurring accounts — car and truck fleets, dealer lots, and repeat residential customers are what turn a mobile wash business from occasional jobs into steady income.
