Single-Line vs. Dual-Line Pressure Washing Systems

Dual-line doesn't automatically mean two pressure washers — here's how the configurations actually differ.

The short answer:a single-line pressure washing system is generally enough for one operator working alone. If two people need to pressure wash at the same time, DETRAILERS can build the system as dual-line — either with two independent pressure washers or with one high-output pressure washer whose flow is divided between two lines. Which configuration makes sense depends primarily on how much flow each operator needs and how the system will be used.

When is a single-line system enough?

A single-line configuration is generally sufficient whenever one operator is pressure washing at a time. That's a question about how many people are actually working simultaneously, not a statement about business size or power — a single-line system can still be a full commercial-grade, high-output setup. Single-line simply means one operator, one line; it doesn't mean entry-level or residential-only.

What does "dual-line" actually mean?

Dual-line doesn't automatically mean two pressure washers. DETRAILERS can configure dual-line operation two different ways, and the right one depends on how much flow each operator actually needs:

One pressure washer, two lines

A pressure washer with enough total output can supply two operators by dividing its available flow between two operating lines. As a simplified example: if an 8 GPM machine is divided between two simultaneously operating lines, each operator would have roughly 4 GPM available in an approximately even split. A 10 GPM machine would provide roughly 5 GPM per line under the same simplified example. These are illustrative examples of an even split, not a guarantee of exactly how every plumbing arrangement performs under every condition.

The underlying principle is straightforward: the machine's total available flow is being shared. One 8 GPM pressure washer can't supply 8 GPM independently to both guns at the same time, and one 10 GPM pressure washer can't supply 10 GPM independently to both guns at the same time.

When do you need two independent pressure washers?

If your operation needs two operators to each receive the full output of a high-flow pressure washer at the same time, independent machines are the way to get there. For example, if two operators each need a full 8 GPM simultaneously, one 8 GPM machine split into two lines can't provide 8 GPM to each gun — that calls for two independent 8 GPM machines. The same is true at 10 GPM: two operators each needing a full 10 GPM simultaneously need two independent 10 GPM machines, not one 10 GPM machine split in half.

The redundancy advantage

Independent pressure washers offer a second advantage beyond simultaneous full output: redundancy. If one pressure washer develops a problem, having a second independent machine may let the crew keep working with the remaining unit instead of losing pressure-washing capability entirely. We've had DETRAILERS customers tell us about situations where one pressure washer went down and the second independent machine allowed them to keep working while the first machine was out of service. That said, redundancy isn't a guarantee — it doesn't mean zero downtime, and it doesn't eliminate the need for maintenance or repairs. It simply means a second, independent machine can be a real advantage when one goes down.

What about more than two operators?

DETRAILERS isn't limited to single- or dual-line systems. We've built pressure-washing systems with as many as four operating lines for operations that need them. Larger multi-line configurations are designed around the actual number of operators and the output each one needs, the same way a single- or dual-line system is — not built to a fixed formula.

Does dual-line mean a bigger water tank?

Not automatically. A dual-line or multi-operator configuration doesn't by itself mean the system needs a larger water tank — tank capacity depends on the application and your actual operating requirements, the same variables that drive tank sizing for any system.
